Cocoa

Memories of the last few moments
before you left us
have begun to merge

The scent of your skin
escapes my clothes
with every passing day

Every thought of you, lifeless -
on the elevator floor,
rips a fresh gash into my heart

How could you -
so full of vitality,
turn to dust in the incinerator?
How could you -
so sweet-faced and doe-eyed,
cease to exist with such tremendous finality?

How am I to think of you with happiness
when the immense sorrow of your departure
weighs me down into the ground
every time I remember you, still

The hallways through which you pranced are now deserted
The doorways, through which you’d suddenly appear
now silent and commonplace
the grass in the garden,
trampled where you once played
has begun to spring up again
as time - the most heartless of betrayers, ploughs on

You magical, beautiful being
each fragment of yours so pure
The most loyal companion to everyone who loved you
and loves you still

How could you ever be reduced to mere words and memories?
